ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

At St. Anthony School, we provide a progressive educational experience that combines quality curriculum and 21st century competencies with Christian-Catholic values in the Marianist spirit. We work collaboratively to unlock each child’s full potential by balancing academic excellence and co-curricular activities in a safe and nurturing environment from preschool through graduation.

St. Anthony School's history with the youth of Maui began in a one-room school house erected in 1848 by the Sacred Heart's Fathers on the grounds of St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. The Brothers and Priests of the Society of Mary (the Marianists) took over the administration of the Boys' School in 1883. Staffed by Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, the Girls' School was founded a year later. In 1968, the two schools merged creating a diocesan coeducational high school. St. Anthony  School (SAS) became a Junior-Senior High School in 1972.

In 2017, the Grade School and Jr/Sr High School were consolidated into one K-12 school system called St. Anthony School under the leadership of a Head of School. An Advancement Office and SAS of Maui Foundation Board were established and operational during the 2018-2019 school year.

Today, St. Anthony School is the only Catholic K-12 School on the island of Maui. The school is governed by the St. Anthony School Board and is a ministry of St. Anthony Church. The school is sponsored and endowed by the Marianist Province of the United States (Society of Mary). It is currently staffed by laymen and laywomen, several of which are proud alumni of St. Anthony School.

    TESTING

There are various assessments administered throughout the school year across grade levels. This includes TerraNova, PSAT (8/9 and NMSQT), SAT, ACRE, and most recently, STAR testing. Testing allows our school to assess student abilities, monitor progress, improve curriculum, maintain standards, and increase college/career preparedness. Recently, some of the testing administrations have moved from pencil and paper to the digital testing format.

For years our school has administered TerraNova testing for grades 2-8. It takes place over multiple days and covers various subjects. It has continued to be administered in the traditional format, by pencil and paper. However, this school year we piloted STAR testing in the digital format for grades 1-12. It is a shorter and adaptive assessment to closely monitor academic progress and gain access to results faster than traditional assessments.

We continue to administer PSAT testing for grades 9-11, to assess students' strengths and areas of improvement in math and reading & writing skills. This was the first year it was administered on the computer. Our students take the PSAT test annually in multiple grades in order to prepare them for standardized testing, such as the SAT and ACT. This testing also determines college and career preparedness. Juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT may be eligible to receive recognition and merit scholarships based on their performance on the test. Test-takers also are given tools through the free resources provided by Khan Academy and Collegeboard, to access individualized study plans based on their results. Seniors are also given the option to take the in-school SAT, which is used for college admissions and scholarships.

In addition to the subject-based assessments, our school administers the ACRE testing for grades 5 and 8. This assesses Catholic and religious knowledge that students have attained through their time at St. Anthony School and/or through attending church. It also assesses the religious attitudes and beliefs of the students.
