New Head of School Announced
Timothy Cullen has been named Head of School of St. Anthony School, effective July 10, 2017. The appointment was made by Rev. Roland Bunda, S.M., pastor of St. Anthony Parish, following an extensive national search and the involvement of a Head of School search committee chaired by Very Rev. Terrance A. M. Watanabe, Vicar Forane and pastor of St. Theresa Parish in nearby Kihei.
Cullen is a lifelong educator who most recently served as Superintendent of the Bishop Hoffman Catholic School system and Principal of its St. Joseph Central Catholic Campus in Fremont, OH. During his time in the Bishop Hoffman system, Cullen quickly earned a reputation as a collaborative Catholic school leader that successfully merged organizational cultures and built strong constituent relationships that enabled the school community to remain accessible, successful, and sustainable. Well-versed in addressing the current challenges and opportunities that face today’s Catholic educational institutions, Cullen has proven capacity and executive leadership experience in advocating and articulating the mission of the schools he has led, all while exhibiting visionary focus and missionary zeal.
In announcing Mr. Cullen to the St. Anthony School community, Fr. Bunda said “Tim is an institution-building leader who is filled with the Holy Spirit, committed to his faith and loves to teach and administer in Catholic Education. While being the chief executive officer of the Bishop Hoffman Catholic School system, he worked tirelessly to integrate the latest educational models and technology into classroom instruction, while building strong constituent relationships at all levels. Most importantly he passionately embraces the ministry of Catholic education as vital to the work of our Church.”
Prior to serving the Bishop Hoffman school communities as Superintendent, Cullen was first a teacher before spending over 20 years in increasingly responsible administrative positions in various Ohio public school systems in and around the Fremont region. Mr. Cullen holds a Bachelor of Art in Education from Bowling Green University and a Master of Art in School Administration from Azusa Pacific University.
In accepting his appointment, Cullen stated “My life journey of serving God’s call through serving others to grow closer to Him brought me to the beautiful families, outstanding school staff and supportive parish of St. Anthony School. The love of faith, the importance of family and the desire to build a great future is something we have in common and something I am very excited to be a part of with St. Anthony School. I look forward to continuing my journey as the new Head of School for St. Anthony School and ask for prayers and patience as we work together to take a great school system and build an even brighter future.”
The exhaustive nationwide search conducted by Boston, MA based Partners in Mission School Leadership Search Solutions, a national retained search and recruiting firm devoted exclusively to developing excellence in Catholic school leadership, bears witness that Cullen possesses the requisite skillset as the academic, spiritual, and innovative leader expected of the distinguished St. Anthony School community. His extensive experience while working collaboratively with students, parents, and alumni will serve as the solid foundation needed as he assumes the position of Head of School, succeeding current Head of School, Betsey Gunderson. Gunderson will be moving to an Assistant Superintendent position in the Diocese of Honolulu, where she will be working closely with all its secondary schools, including St. Anthony School.
In leading the search committee efforts, an elated Msgr. His enthusiasm, leadership, sense of humor and deep faith was evident in our many encounters with this candidate. Tim has a great vision for Catholic Education and that vision will continue to enrich and encourage all those who are involved with St. Anthony School to be the best that it has ever been. Congrats to our students in the Daughters of American Revolution Essay Contest!
Proud of our St. Anthony students that were recently awarded certificates for participating in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay contest. One student, Senior Lora Dodson, won the Maui contest, winning $25 in prizes! Her essay was submitted for the State contest and she won that as well, receiving an additional $50 in prizes in that level. Her essay will now be forwarded on to compete on a national level. Pray for Lora’s success!

JANUARY HIGHLIGHTS. The first month of 2017 has brought many blessings at St. Anthony Middle School and High School.
- Our Middle School marked its first 100 days with a special celebration for students in the 6th– to 8th-grade on January 20. Please be sure to read the work of our exploratory Journalism class work at:
In its most recent issue, the St. Anthony Middle School or SAMS Weekly staff highlighted talents in the theme “Hobbies.” Students gave insight into what they enjoy both inside and outside of school.
- The Class of 2017’s senior projects culminated with presentations before faculty, family and friends, also on January 20.Our soon-to-be graduates tackled some of the island’s most pressing issues, ranging from homelessness and hunger, to social anxiety and suicide.
- Senior Keoni Lee’s passion for drones was on display atSaturday’sOpen House as he and 20-plus students from 6th– through 12-grade shared their positive educational and co-curricular experiences to the dozens of families who came to see what their school has to offer. Mahalo to the students and staff who welcomed dozens of guests to the St. Anthony campus – preschool, grade school, middle school and high school.
- For the first time in a long time, or may be even ever, we hosted a Girls Soccer game on Sullivan Field.
- Our Giving Tuesdaycampaign, which opened on the Tuesdayafter Thanksgiving, comes to a close with nearly double the money garnered from its inaugural year in 2015.

WEDNESDAYS IN FEBRUARY. Following Open House, our campus will be open for tours on Wednesdays in February. This is a chance for prospective families to get a one-on-one, up close look at what happens on a school day at St. Anthony. TENNIS ANYONE? There will be a mandatory meeting after school on Thursday, February 2nd, in Coach Jim’s classroom, Room 105. This meeting is for all new and returning players — boys and girls. We welcome all levels and abilities of players. Come by the meeting to discuss the upcoming scrimmage, t-shirts, uniforms, calendar, and much more. Practice begins soon.
NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY. Students can enjoy a three-day weekend beginning this Friday, February 3rd, with no classes scheduled on campus. Our teachers are scheduled to participate on Maui in the Annual Conference for Catholic Schools Educators.
SPELLING REPRESENTATION. Congratulations to 8th-graders Max McGrath and Anjeleigh Dela Cruz for representing St. Anthony Middle School at this year’s Maui District Spelling Bee. We applaud your efforts and thank you for representing St. Anthony to the best of your ability.
PTG FUNDRAISER. All St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School studentswill be bringing home information and tickets for the pre-sale of one-pound Kalua Pork containers prepared by Pukalani Superette as a fundraiser to the support events sponsored by the PTG. A letter with tickets and details about the fundraiser is included in the envelope provided to students. Parents are encouraged to ask their students about the fundraising envelope. Thanks for your support.
OPEN HOUSE 2017. A big mahalo to our faculty, staff and student guides for sharing the best St. Anthony has to offer at Open House this past weekend. We had the largest number of visitors recorded in the last three years.

PTG RUMMAGE SALE. The St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School PTG has scheduled a fundraising rummage sale for 8 a.m. to 12 Noon,Saturday, March 4, on campus. Please consider donating gently used items to help raise money to support PTG events. Items may be brought to school at morning drop off or afternoon pick up to room 111 (Physics classroom in the science quad) or call Annette Dorheim 808-866-0554 to make other arrangements or Anne Clur (808-281-2172).
CAFÉ LUNCH ORDERS: REMINDER all lunch orders are due by the15th of the month. All orders are to be submitted to the cafeteria. Menu for March is attached. Copies are also available in cafeteria dining hall or through school main office. School ID cards are to be used for all snack and lunch sales.
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Representatives from Maui Police Department will visit our Middle School to discuss various topics including bullying, social media, and consequences for bad choices in February. Topics are subject to change.

We are truly blessed by the support at the 2016 Links to Education Golf Tournament at the Dunes at Maui Lani and at the 27th annual Ho’olaule’a on our school’s Sullivan Field. Both events held on June 25th were successful. We had a lot of fun while raising funds to support our athletic and financial aid programs.
It’s a New Generation at St. Anthony. It’s a New Day for Maui!
