Nate Mickelson
Middle School Science & STEM

Mr. Mickelson brings sixteen years of experience teaching Chemistry, Biology, and Physical Science as well as five years of Driver Education to St. Anthony School.
He studied biological sciences and chemistry as an undergraduate student, found his calling his senior year, and went on to obtain his M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction specializing in secondary science education from the University of Wisconsin. After teaching for about seven years in Maui, he attained his National Board Certification in Adolescence and Young Adulthood – Chemistry Emphasis.
He is a member of the American Association of Chemistry Teachers, American Chemical Society, National Science Teachers Association, volunteered as a Next Generation Science Standards liaison, and contributed to the Hawaii State Science Bridge Assessment review committee through the American Institutes for Research.
He has experience traveling with students abroad for life changing experiences, loves coaching cross country, coaching for Science Olympiad, Ocean Sciences Bowl-where he earned recognition from the Hawaii State Senate. In 2020, the St. Anthony middle school chemistry club took first place in the state in the You Be the Chemist national competition.
When Mr. Mickelson is not reading about science and/or education, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, traveling, experiencing cultures, rock climbing, mountaineering, snorkeling, mountain biking, walks with his dog, working around the house, volunteering, running, photography, surfing, skating, and skiing.
His philosophy is that learning science is doing science and he will do his very best to make learning fun.
