WELCOME BACK TO ST. ANTHONY JUNIOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL!

I do hope that your summer was fun, restful and full of new adventures. We’ve had a very busy summer creating an environment truly conducive to learning.

  • Two of the three Boy Scouts (St. Anthony’s Troop) who are building the pavilion have completed their assignments: Jonathan I. Vellina ( Baldwin) installed the cement posts and Robert Hill IV (Kamehameha, Kapalama Campus) constructed the roof. Jarrett Nanod ( Baldwin) will be refurbishing the concrete slab and landscaping the area. This has been a massive, difficult, expensive project and the young men obtained major donations and brought in many skilled volunteers to complete their segments. A special mahalo goes to Mr. Mike Williams who recommended this project and is advising the young men as one of their Scout leaders.
  • We are working closely with the Parish to redo our School Lunch Program. Students and parish volunteers cleaned and painted the interior of the cafeteria kitchen; the Parish had portions of the ceiling and roof repaired; we are purchasing ceiling fans for the kitchen and checking into the purchase of commercial fans for the dining room; the Parish purchased the AccuScan system for meal ticket collection allowing parents/students to prepay by the week, month, year, etc. (See attached for description.) The electrical wiring is also being checked and upgraded.
  • The Art Room underwent major renovations: Matt Kele, his son, Matt Kele, Cory Kamaka and volunteer masons poured a new cement floor; we put in a pump to help us avoid flooding; new double doors were installed; sections of the old home economic kitchens were removed; the interior was cleaned and painted; new windows installed and torn screens replaced.
  • Broken windows were replaced in the Counselor’s office.
  • The upper campus faculty lounge was cleaned and painted; and new furniture and carpet have been installed.
  • The main office has been reorganized for improved service and accessibility; new signage will be placed to help visitors locate the offices they need and many offices were painted by their respective administrators & families.
  • The renovations to the Weight Room have begun – the eventual total cost of these improvements will be $110,000.00. Labor and equipment have all been donated and we are so fortunate to have this major project managed by Tal Shibley, Mark Miller, John Medeiros, Dan Molin and Jim Klaczak Since 90% of our students participate in at least one sport, this will have a substantial impact on the vast majority of our students.
  • Please extend your gratitude to the Ritz Carlton; they donated fitness equipment to our athletes – valued at $65,000.00.
  • The Science Quad will be graded this weekend; cement poured beneath the existing bleachers and shade cloth draped overhead. The students use this as a seating area for school assemblies and a gathering place before and during school.
  • The roof over Chaminade computer lab was repaired; the electrical and computer wiring in and outside of the lab will be encased; and ceiling tiles suffering from water damage will be replaced.
  • Another of St. Anthony’s guardian angels will be helping us pave the parking lot, circle in front of the old convent, and the area behind the weight room. We will keep you posted on this timeline.

As you can see, we’ve been extremely busy this summer…

We were able to fill all of our vacant or new teaching positions and are excited with their extensive and varied backgrounds. We’ll introduce everyone at our PTG Open House.

Due to past circumstances, the Marianists have placed us on a one year period of discernment. Fr. Tim Kenny has assigned his deputy to serve as our liaison and we expect to have several evaluative visits from the Marianists during the course of this school year so they may ascertain our progress towards their goals.

My goals for SY04-05 include:

  • Successfully passing this Marianist probation;
  • Continuing to improve our financial status;
  • Creating a positive learning and working environment;
  • Providing a clean, safe and attractive environment; and
  • Strengthening our curricular offerings.
    • We have added Band, Drama, and AP Science.
    • Our athletic trainer is now on staff.
    • We have a true mentor in Pat Roche will work with teachers to incorporate Writing Across The Curriculum into our school
    • Mrs. Rickard, our Academic Dean, is working with the Academic Council and Departments to align our curriculum to state and national standards and to assess our progress.

I am thrilled with our administrators, faculty and staff and we all look for a fabulous school year!
