For over 20 years the 7th grade students of St. Anthony Jr. Sr. High School have had the opportunity to spend 3 days and 2 nights as guests at Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) situated in Volcanoes National Park (about 4,000’ elevation) on the Big Island. This year, our group walked a total of 10 miles through rainforest and lava trails. The first major hike was 450 ft. down into Kilauea Iki. That evening we walked from KMC to Jaggar Museum. The students were treated to a great show in Halemaumau Crater and we were also able to see Jupiter aligned with four of its thirteen moons. It was an awesome sight. The weather was wonderful. The accommodations were great, the food plentiful and delicious. During recreation time, the students enjoyed bowling, table tennis, pool, video games, and snacks. Our last day we visited ‘Imiloa (a science museum) and did some sightseeing. Our next Big Island trip is scheduled for November 3-4-5 of 2010.
