Science

The Science Department, aware that our scientific and complex world demands more than a simple knowledge of facts, strives to achieve a truly scientific literacy in our students. We believe that literacy in science demands a dynamic between four key aspects:

  • Functional literacy, focusing primarily on the acquisition of scientific information and its technical vocabulary;
  • Conceptual literacy, requiring understanding of the relationships between the various disciplines of science;
  • Procedural literacy, an heir of the “scientific method,” involving definite procedures, processes, and techniques for acquiring information and for arriving at conclusions;
  • Multidimensional literacy, enabling students to develop an understanding of science in both historical and contemporary contexts. Additionally, this perspective of science includes, but is not limited to, scientific research, ethics, aesthetics, and values, the political aspects of research and conservation, as well as mathematical applications and technology.

Students become learners capable of making responsible choices through relevant instruction. We are convinced that these positive educational experiences will direct students toward creative and constructive reasoning. Thus educated, our graduates will be able to make a personal contribution towards creating a true harmony between humanity and the created universe.
