Service Learning at St. Anthony Jr./Sr. High School
We require our students to complete a number of service hours each year. We have students in grades 7-12, and the required number of hours increases every year. We created guidelines for each year on the "types" of service we ask out students to complete. Students will be asked to fill out a community service hours log sheet to turn in at the end of each semester.
7-8th grade: Service to and with their Families
We want our students to view service as a means of helping others, but to remember that we cannot forget those closest to us. We ask the 7th grade to complete 10 hours for the year,/8th grade to complete 12 hours for the year, with half of those hours specifically their families' needs. We encourage the families to do projects together as a whole family.
9th grade: service to the School and Church
We want our students to take ownership of their school and church, and to assist in making our learning and faith communities run smoothly. We also encourage them to learn how to ask to help others. These projects may be for teachers in the classroom, helping with the maintenance of the school or serving a need in their parish. They are to complete 16 hours for the year, with half of them specifically helping the school or church.
10th grade: service to the Community
We ask our students to go out into the community and help at various locations. Many of these hours include community events such as non-profit organizations, fairs, Relay for Life, etc. Our hope is to connect them to non-profit agencies to learn about organizations that work to help others. They are to complete 20 hours for the year, with half of those specifically focused on community hours.
11th grade: service to the Environment/Animals
We want our students to help keep the island of Maui beautiful! They are allowed to do trash clean-ups, or work with different environment-based non-profit organizations to help care for the environment. Many students wanted to work with our humane society, so we allowed animals to fit with environment. They are to complete 24 hours, half of them focused on the environment or care of animals.
12th grade: SHED hours (service to Sick, Homeless, Elderly, or Disabled members of society)
During their senior year, we challenge our students to go out of their comfort zones and to care for the marginalized members of our society. Many of them will work at soup kitchens, nursing homes, and homeless shelters. They are to complete 28 hours, half of the focused on SHED.
