Grading Scale
Grading is the written symbol that teachers ascribe to a student’s academic performance. Teachers explain their grading standards in the form of academic expectations, which are distributed at the beginning of each course. The academic year is divided into two terms. The term grade is the final grade for each course, which appears on the student’s official transcript.
Each term course passed with a D grade or higher, results in the earning of one credit towards graduation (grades 9 - 12). If there are any questions as to the academic expectations presented at the beginning of any course, both students and parents are encouraged to speak with the teacher for clarification.
Saint Anthony Junior Senior High School provides report cards at the end of each quarter. Additionally, current grades will be posted on Powerschool weekly in an attempt to motivate students and to inform parents of student progress. Adding the grade points equivalent to each letter grade and dividing this sum by the number of courses taken determines a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA). GPA's are used to determine honor roll lists, class ranking, academic probation and athletic eligibility.
Parents will be notified when a student’s academic performance is below average or below their ability. Reports may also be issued to indicate positive achievement and to bring a student’s positive performance to the attention of their parents.
It is important to note that Saint Anthony requires all students to successfully complete all classes in order to be promoted to the next grade. Students, who fail any class for the semester, must attend summer school in order to make up the course or to make up the credit. In order to return to Saint Anthony the following school year, summer school is required. Only the Academic Dean may grant a summer school deferment – meaning summer school is not waived, but can be taken the following year. Parents must apply for this deferment in writing.
Each student’s grade point average will be determined by using the following scale:

- In computing the GPA, the points earned in all courses will be weighted equally. The GPA is computed by adding the points earned in each course and then dividing by the number of courses.
- Only grades for courses taken at Saint Anthony will be used for the computation of the GPA and CGPA. The Academic Dean will determine whether course credit from another school will be recognized and counted toward graduation.
Grades are defined as follows:
A |
The student consistently exhibits mastery in achieving the curriculum standards and course expectations.
B |
The student frequently exhibits mastery in achieving the curriculum standards and course expectations.
C |
The student exhibits competency in achieving the curriculum standards and course expectations.
D |
The student exhibits minimum competency in achieving the curriculum standards and course expectations. A student who earns a grade of “D” may not automatically proceed to a subsequent course. Permission from the Academic Dean is required. |
|
F |
Represents a student’s failure to achieve the curriculum standards and course expectations. A student who earns a grade of “F” must receive permission from the Academic Dean to repeat the course. |
|
I |
Incomplete fulfillment of course requirements. A student has 10 school days from the end of the quarter in which to make up work. Failure to complete the incomplete work within the specified time period will result in a “F” for the course.
P |
Passing with credit awarded. |
Grades provide a measure of each student’s ability to do college-level work. At Saint Anthony the “B” grade or better is a college-recommended grade. The grade of “D,” while unacceptable for admission to most colleges, does allow credit toward graduation from Saint Anthony.
A cumulative grade point average (CGPA) based on semester grades will be computed each semester beginning with the Saint Anthony summer session immediately preceding the student’s freshman year. Points for grades earned in all weighted courses will be divided by the total number of weighted courses taken to determine the CGPA.
- The CGPA is computed on the basis of academic work completed only at Saint Anthony.
- Grades for courses taken during the summer at Saint Anthony will be considered in the computation of the CGPA in the following fall semester.
